Today's dish is a unique take on mashed sweet potatoes, and they're so delicious!
This recipe yields a creamy, naturally sweetened bowl of nutrient-dense potatoes that are complimented by the melty goodness of butter, as well as fresh ginger and orange. It's a great twist on a traditional recipe!
Growing up, my family used to troop over to my uncle's house where there would be an incredible spread. The usual turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie were all there, as was the marshmallow-covered sweet potato casserole that I wouldn't touch.
Younger me hated anything involving sweet potato, but my palate has matured.
Ingredients and substitutions
- Sweet potatoes - Jewel or garnet yams also work.
- Buttermilk - Whole milk, half and half, and dairy-free milk can also be used.
- Fresh ginger
- Orange juice and zest
- Butter
- Sea salt
- Nutmeg
Recipe steps
The first thing to do is peel and cube your sweet potatoes. Mashed sweet potato tends to be on the chunky side, so I generally take the skin off.
The next step is either steam or boil your potato cubes until soft. I opt for steaming, as I feel the potatoes retain more nutrients this way.
Once the potatoes are fork-tender, add in the remaining ingredients and mash until the desired consistency. You can also beat the potatoes for a smoother texture.
Recipe notes
To make your own buttermilk, add 3/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a measuring cup. Then add enough almond milk to equal 1/4 cup. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then use as directed.

Oh, love the addition of orange juice here! I bet it adds such an amazing zing! I've only recently discovered the beauty of mashed sweet potatoes but I had them spiced with curry. I'll be trying this version for sure!
