These scrumptious Valentine's Day cookies are the perfect healthy treat for the people you love! The recipe is lower in sugar and can be topped in a number of ways with icing, frosting, and sprinkles. Decorating the cookies also makes a great activity for the kids.

I've never been big on Valentine's Day, but I do love my family, and I do love this blog, so I'm sharing a delicious, lower sugar cookie recipe today!
I love this recipe! It's so easy and quick to make, and my kids all have fun making the dough, rolling it out, and decorating the cookies.
I've tried this recipe with multiple flours, including whole wheat, whole spelt, all-purpose, and whole wheat pastry. The winner here was whole wheat pastry, as it has the light taste of white, but also some whole grain nutrition.
Ingredients and substitutions
- Whole wheat pastry flour - All-purpose will also work.
- Granulated sugar - Cane sugar or turbinado both work.
- Baking powder
- Sea salt
- Butter
- Milk of your choice - I generally use whole milk.
- Vanilla extract
Recipe steps
This is a one bowl recipe, which is nice for clean up. I begin by mixing the dry ingredients in a large bowl, then I stir in the butter, milk, and vanilla.
Only add enough milk to make a soft dough that isn't sticking to your hands. This is around three tablespoons for me.

Chill the dough for ten minutes while the oven preheats.
Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness and use cookie cutters to cut them out as you like.

Recipe tips
Be sure to measure your flour using a food scale for accurate baking.
If you use unsalted butter, you may need closer to 1/4 teaspoon salt.
This is a good frosting recipe that hardens, and it has NO corn syrup!
Here's an icing recipe with only two ingredients!
If you're trying to eat less sugar, try using powdered xylitol in the the frosting or icing recipes.
